Why I believe Sorority Girls can Change the World

Here is my original post, which lead to my book, and eventually to speaking to over 50 colleges nationwide. The blog that started it all… Why I believe Sorority Girls can Change the World.

I was a marketing major and spent my whole “grown up life” working in advertising. All that marketing experience has given me a front-row seat to the extraordinary power of influence from sorority women.

The Comfort Colors Ah Ha moment

in 2014 I was working in advertising for a promotional company. Out of the blue, I began getting requests for a brand of tees I had never heard of, Comfort Colors.

In fact, the demand came on so strong and so suddenly, every time I went to enter an order I had to click a disclaimer admitting I understood the stock shortages and shipping delays as the company was experiencing “more growth than at any point in history.”

I asked my boss, “Was this a new company, did they launch a new product? Was Beyoncé wearing their tees?” He surprised me to say, “Comfort Colors has been around since the 70’s and their CEO had just passed away.

What the heck was happening over there with Comfort Colors?

In January we went to our annual trade show where I got to meet some people behind the scenes at Comfort Colors corporate. I said something of the effect of, “I’m just a girl from Georgia but I couldn’t help notice the college girls wearing Comfort Colors all over campus and you guys exploding in popularity. Are sorority girls responsible for your sudden growth?”

What she said next will stay with me forever, “Oh yes, Sorority Girls can Change the World.

Later that same year, Gildan the largest T-shirt distributor on the planet, bought Comfort Colors for a price tag of, (I hope you are sitting down for this) ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS. Ten times their previous net worth and STILL growing even to this day.

Mind blown.

This phenomenal power of influence got me thinking, What if sorority women used this incredible leadership potential to show the world something amazing….even more amazing than comfortable T-shirts. (I know right?)”

Yes, I understand Greek life supports philanthropy and does some amazing things BUT… TAKE A DEEP BREATH…

What if philanthropy was the social?

Imagine if 150 girls partnered with a fraternity and brought that man (and woman) power to habitat for humanity or any other local organization changing the community. If 300 guys and girls saved the $5 they would normally spend on just 1 drink and donated it to said organization.  That’s $1,500!  That could go a long way for a non-profit.

Ideas could be as simple as painting over graffiti. picking up trash, sitting with the elderly, or helping in a children’s home.  Imagine how stereotypes of greek like would change by the positive impact Greek life could make in the community.

Now let me ask a hard question if you lost your charter tomorrow, who in the city would miss you most? Would it be the bars who serve Tequila Tuesday, or the local non-profits because they value your partnership? What has a greater impact? What will you remember when you are 30?

Hint You won’t remember Tequila Tuesday even on Wednesday.

Why I believe Sorority Girls can Change the DATING World

The final most important power of influence I see in sorority girls is the power to change the dating world. Why in the world is a beautiful sorority girl with the power to turn an irrelevant T-shirt into a multi million dollar trend crying into her latte of some stinking boy who didn’t treat her well?

From the Good Man Project, author Dave Booda says it this way:

Ladies, if you really want men to step up and become the real men you talk about, you must demand it. I’m not saying ask for it, I’m not saying hope for it, I’m saying demand it.  What does that mean? It means you don’t settle for anything less. It means if you aren’t satisfied, you walk away. Men will rise up and meet your challenge, I promise, it’s what we do best. We love challenges. We love it when women make us step up and work.

Men want to chase your heart, we just need to stop making it so easy for them. (mic drop)

If you’re afraid this will leave you alone.  First of all look in the mirror…you’re gorgeous. Second look at your birthday, your still a baby and third look at your heavenly father. Don’t you think the desires of your heart are fully known?  Don’t you think your good and loving father wants better for you than a guy who pushes your limits physically and makes you worry if he is true to only you? God’s got this, I promise.

Final thoughts on why Sorority Girls can Change the World:

• Your dollars matter.  Marketing 101 tells us you vote for the type of world you want with the dollars you spend. That has never been more true than with trend setting sorority girls.
• What would your campus and community miss if your sorority didn’t exist? What legacy can you leave behind?
• Raise the bar when it comes to dating. You are worth romancing.
